Get the Facts on Independent Power Production
The facts
- An independent power policy (IPP) would not in any way privatize Yukon's public assets.
- There was widespread public support for independent power production and net metering during the 2008 public consultation on the Energy Strategy for Yukon.
- The Government of Yukon reflected this public interest by identifying IPP and net metering as a priority action in the 2009 Yukon Energy Strategy (released January, 2009).
- Working with both the Yukon Energy Corporation and the Yukon Electrical Company Ltd, the Yukon government will seek public input on IPP and net metering policies to ensure that the these policies reflect the needs of Yukoners.
- Consultation will begin this fall as a step towards developing a policy.
Why do we need these policies?
- An IPP policy would offer both utilities increased options to meet Yukon’s future energy demand.
- IPP and net metering policies will make it viable for independent power producers and electricity customers to generate clean, renewable electricity for sale to Yukon’s existing utilities. These policies will facilitate the purchase of electricity from independent power producers and allow individuals to connect renewable energy sources to the grid.
- A more diversified mix of power producers will strengthen Yukon’s energy security, keep electrical rates low, and make the electrical system more reliable.
