WHITEHORSE – Thomson Centre will once again serve as a residence for Yukoners requiring long-term care. The Yukon government will lease space in the centre from the hospital and will convert the building back into a long-term care facility.
“We are facing increased demands for long-term care and palliative care beds,” Health and Social Services Minister Glenn Hart said. “The need will continue to grow and we have a facility that was designed expressly for this purpose. The repairs and upgrades will bring the building up to code for a residential facility.”
Thomson Centre opened in 1993 as an extended care facility designed to house residents requiring a high level of care. Prior to its closing in 2002 for repairs, it housed 44 residents. The facility was taken over by the hospital in 2008.
A request for proposals for planning and design of the required repairs and upgrades to the first 19 beds and preparations for adjoining space is expected to be released before January.
