WHITEHORSE – Twelve Yukon museums and First Nation cultural / heritage centres, along with the Yukon Historical and Museums Association, will share $300,000 to support capital projects.
“We are pleased to support Yukon’s museums, interpretive centres and First Nation cultural / heritage centres,” Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor said. “The preservation of our heritage protects the story of who we are as Yukoners and shares the richness of this history with visitors to the North.”
The Special Projects Capital Assistance Program provides assistance with joint marketing initiatives, capital acquisition/improvements, artifact inventory and cataloguing, exhibit planning and development, conservation, and revenue generation. Since the start of the program in 2006, $1.24 million has been allocated, including this intake, to assist museums throughout Yukon.
This year the Dawson City Museum received funding for two projects including: $26,775 for collections cataloguing, and $10,989 to upgrade the museum’s
computers.
"We are very grateful for the investment made by the Department of Tourism and Culture,” executive director Laura Mann said. “The contribution to collections work and upgrades to museum equipment provides essential support for the current and future goals of the museum.”
During the fiscal year 2009-10, the Department of Tourism and Culture will provide over $1.3 million in direct funding support to Yukon’s museums, interpretive and First Nation cultural / heritage centres. For more information on this funding program visit www.tc.gov.yk.ca/475.html
