Government Announces New Recycling Program for Schools
WHITEHORSE – In recognition of Earth Day, the Government of Yukon is providing schools with new funds so they can practise sound environmental stewardship by helping students recycle, reuse and compost, Education Minister Patrick Rouble and Environment Minister Elaine Taylor announced today.
“The Yukon government is pleased to increase its financial support for community recycling initiatives including a new recycling program for schools,” Taylor said. “These new funds will help ‘green’ all 28 Yukon schools to the benefit of local land fills, community recycling depots, and the environment.”
The $75,000 program is part of the Yukon government’s commitment to provide incentives for Yukoners, particularly youth, to recycle, reuse, compost and reduce their waste. The government now spends more than $518,000 annually on recycling programs and program support.
“In addition to Earth Day, this announcement supports our theme for Education Week: Engaged Communities – Engaged Learners, because it’s clear that positive changes at schools will benefit families and communities as well as help to minimize our environmental footprint,” Rouble said. “Up to $2,500 per school will be available to support recycling education, recycling activities and related efforts, and this funding will significantly enhance our environmental stewardship efforts.”
The new program will enhance current initiatives while providing funding for new programs aimed at greening Yukon schools for both environmental and economic reasons.
