Node News is Good News for Yukon Researchers
WHITEHORSE – The first Canadian Climate Change Scenarios Network server node ‘North of 60’ will be one of the services collaboratively offered by the new Yukon Climate Change Research Centre of Excellence, Environment Minister Elaine Taylor announced today.
The Yukon server node is part of Environment Canada’s Canadian Climate Change Scenarios Network and was developed in collaboration with Yukon College and the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN).
“Having this valuable technical data based here means enhanced access for Yukon researchers and storage for Yukon-based data and research,” Taylor said. “The node will support the impact and adaptation research needed to further our efforts to respond effectively to climate change challenges.”
“First Nations’ work around climate change will benefit from this new service,” CYFN Grand Chief Andy Carvill said. “We have a special interest in community health and human environments that may be helpful to other researchers in future.”
“Yukon College is pleased to support this important climate change initiative,” President Terry Weninger said. “We anticipate the Yukon node will significantly benefit ongoing climate change research here. Supporting northern research is one of the college’s six strategic directions.”
The Yukon server node joins a network that provides climate change scenario data, analysis, reports, and adaptation research for governments, First Nations, researchers and the general public. A Yukon-based server node provides users with the opportunity to develop regionally significant information and data.
The server node will be physically located at the Ayamdigut Campus of Yukon College and accessible by academic, private, and public research communities. It will house the output data of climate change models from major efforts underway around the world. Soon programming will be developed to inform and support climate change efforts that deal with regional concerns.
