Community Development Fund Distributes Monies for Infrastructure

WHITEHORSE – Yukon government’s Community Development Fund (CDF) is awarding over $392,000 from its Tier 2 intake.

“Most of the funding for this intake will go towards infrastructure projects covering everything from public safety, recreation and heritage to recycling,” Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. “These are all excellent projects that will contribute to the quality of lives of Yukoners.”

The Miles Canyon Historic Railway Society is receiving $29,751 in funding to improve its infrastructure and develop a marketing plan.

“This funding will go toward repairs at the Copperbelt Railway and Mining Museum, namely the roof of our Quonset hut where the Loki locomotives are kept and for the construction of two small shelters to protect our artifacts from the elements,” Miles Canyon Historic Railway Society Treasurer Norman Eady said. “A comprehensive marketing plan will help us promote our attraction to the community and to visitors as we prepare for the oncoming season.”

A contribution of $56,131 will go to the Royal Canadian Legion for the purchase and installation of a wheelchair lift at its new location.

“Our new Whitehorse legion branch, located at 503 Steele Street, has more than one level. To enable older and handicapped members as well as the public to visit us and attend various functions, we require a wheelchair lift,” Royal Canadian Legion First Vice-President Don Knutson said.

Community development funding can cover up to 90 per cent of project costs. Tier 1 funding is available for requests up to $20,000. Tier 2 funding is available for applicants requesting $20,001 to $75,000, and Tier 3 funding is available for requests over $75,000. The next intake deadline is January 15, 2009 for both Tier 1 and Tier 3 applications.

Organizations are encouraged to contact the CDF office with their project ideas well before the deadline date. CDF staff members are available to help proponents develop project ideas and guide applicants through the application process.
