Yukon to Participate in International Climate Leaders Summit
WHITEHORSE – As a signatory to the 2005 Declaration of Federated States on Climate Change, the Yukon government will be participating in the Climate Leaders Summit on December 8 in conjunction with the 14th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 14) in Poznan, Poland, Environment Minister Elaine Taylor announced today.
The Yukon delegation will include Minister Taylor, opposition MLAs Darius Elias and Todd Hardy as well as Department of Environment officials.
“Climate change is a global challenge which requires a global response,” Taylor said. “Participation in the Climate Leaders Summit will provide the opportunity to speak to Yukon’s commitment and experience in responding to climate change, learn best practices of other jurisdictions and build networks to support our future efforts.”
The Climate Leaders Summit will focus international attention on the efforts of 30 sub-national governments from Canada, United States, Europe, Australia, Africa and South America who are working to address climate change through energy efficiency, renewable energy and other measures.
“We welcome this unique opportunity to share priority actions undertaken by the Yukon government while continuing to build and develop Yukon’s response to climate change,” Taylor added.
The Climate Leaders Summit will include a session with influential corporate leaders from around the world to discuss ways to accelerate the deployment of energy efficiency, low carbon technology and clean energy. Yukon delegation members will also attend COP 14 plenary sessions, exhibits and side events.
The Yukon government is also providing financial support to Yukoner, Lia Johnson to attend COP 14 as a selected member of the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition delegation.
