Additional Funding for Apprenticeship Training Announced

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon government is investing an additional $386,000 in apprenticeship training, Minister of Education Patrick Rouble announced.

“Department of Education staff and our partners have been successful in promoting trades as a career choice. Yukon employers have registered record numbers of apprentices,” Rouble said. “Government will continue to support apprenticeship in Yukon with our increased funding for in-school apprentice training.”

Service Canada reimburses the Yukon government for course costs for all Yukon apprentices attending in-school training. This year, the higher the number of apprentices requiring in-school training has meant that the apprenticeship training expenses exceed the $815,000 that has been budgeted from the Canada-Yukon Skills Training Agreement funding, provided by Service Canada. As a result, pending legislative approval, Yukon government is injecting the additional funds to ensure Yukon apprentices have access to the courses they need.

“By supporting a skilled labour force, we are working to ensure Yukoners are prepared for Yukon opportunities,” Rouble added.

By September 30, 2008, there were 413 Yukon residents registered as apprentices in 31 of the 48 trades designated in Yukon. On September 30, 2005, there were only 288 apprentices registered, which represents an increase of 43 per cent over that date.
