2008 Leckie Award Winners Announced

WHITEHORSE – The winners of the Robert E. Leckie Award were announced yesterday evening at the annual Geoscience Forum banquet. This year Selwyn Resources Limited and Ross Mining Limited were honoured for their exemplary and innovative quartz and placer reclamation practices.

The Robert E. Leckie Award is presented annually to acknowledge outstanding reclamation and site restoration efforts. These efforts can include excellence in environmental stewardship, outstanding social responsibility and leadership and innovation in reclamation processes.

“The Yukon government wishes to congratulate this year’s recipients of the Leckie Award,” Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Brad Cathers said. “The 2008 recipients have undertaken extensive reclamation projects and their dedication to Yukon deserves to be recognized.”

Selwyn received the 2008 Leckie Award for quartz mining for its work at Howard’s Pass and for its innovative approach to providing environmental education to community members in Ross River.

Ross Mining received the 2008 Leckie Award for placer mining. The company has undertaken exemplary reclamation projects since it began placer mining at Dominion Creek in the early 1980s. Jon Rudolph of Ross Mining has also pioneered an ethical gold certification for Ross Mining and other Klondike placer miners. The certification acknowledges leading reclamation practices while enabling entry into premium gold markets.

Honourable mention awards were given to KRL Resources Corporation for its work on NOR property and to HC Mining Limited for its work at Moosehorn Creek.

“Reclamation is an important part of the mining cycle,” Cathers said. “It is important that we take time to acknowledge companies that show their dedication to Yukon by going above and beyond today’s reclamation standards.”

Nominations are reviewed by a selection committee comprising representatives from government, mining associations and the private sector.

This award is given in honour of Robert (Bob) E. Leckie, a Mayo mining inspector and innovator dedicated to the development of progressive land use practices for mining.
