Street Crime Reduction Team Efforts Paying Off in Yukon
WHITEHORSE – The Yukon government remains dedicated to reducing crime on the streets of Yukon.
The RCMP’s Street Crime Reduction Team has released details on enforcement activities from April 1 to September 30, 2008. The team has:
• made 102 Criminal Code arrests;
• executed 58 arrest warrants;
• undertaken 128 curfew checks on prolific and priority offenders;
• taken 93 intoxicated persons into custody; and
• laid 16 charges under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.
“These numbers show this program is working,” Justice Minister Marian C. Horne said. “This government will continue to work with the RCMP to ensure Yukon’s streets are safe.”
The Street Crime Reduction Team is working to provide a more rapid response time to calls for service and make more drug-related arrests.
The team is also working to decrease the incidence of street-level crime and to increase the visibility of the RCMP in the community.
“The Street Crime Reduction Team is a part of our overall crime reduction strategy,” RCMP M Division Commanding Officer Chief Superintendent Barry Harvie said. “By forming partnerships and using a collaborative approach to address the chronic criminals who are causing the majority of crime, we will have continued success.”
The Street Crime Reduction Team is dedicated to street-level drug- and alcohol-related crime enforcement and prevention. It comprises six police officers, a criminal analyst and a communications strategist.
The Yukon government has committed $1.5 million over three years to support the initiative, which has been in operation since April 1, 2007.
