Building Canada Plan to Benefit Yukon Infrastructure

WHITEHORSE – Yukon government will commence with the consultation phase for preparation of the long-term Yukon Infrastructure Plan that is required to implement the Building Canada Plan in Yukon, Premier Dennis Fentie announced today.

Building Canada Plan is the government of Canada’s new long-term infrastructure plan. On March 17, 2008, Canada and Yukon announced the signing of a Framework Agreement under Building Canada, which will provide $182.9 million to Yukon over the next seven years to help drive economic growth and productivity, achieve environmental goals and build strong, competitive communities.

“The Building Canada Plan will help ensure that the base infrastructure for all Yukon communities is brought up to standard and will be available to support community needs well into the future,” Fentie said.

The development of the long-term plan will include consultation with all Yukon municipalities, First Nations, local advisory committees and the general public.

Yukon will receive an average of $26.13 million annually under Building Canada Base Funding, ending in 2013-14, for priority infrastructure. The money will flow following joint review and acceptance by Canada and Yukon of an annual capital plan.

“Yukon will focus the implementation of the Building Canada Plan on drinking water, wastewater, roads, solid waste management and green energy infrastructure projects throughout the territory,” Fentie added.

Under the Building Canada Plan, Yukon First Nation governments and municipalities will also receive $60 million through the extension of the Gas Tax Fund between 2010 and 2014.
