Low Income Yukon Seniors to Receive Income Boost
WHITEHORSE – Low income Yukon seniors receiving an income supplement from government can look forward to a larger cheque, Health and Social Services Minister Glenn Hart announced today.
“We will be tabling amendments to the Yukon Seniors’ Income Supplement (YSIS) Act this sitting,” Hart announced. “These amendments will allow us to double the benefits received by eligible Yukon seniors to a maximum of $200 a month, or $2400 per year for those receiving the full supplement.”
“Government is also seeking to link the supplement to the Consumer Price Index to address increasing costs,” Hart added.
The annual cost is expected to be approximately $810,000 in total.
The Yukon Seniors’ Income Supplement (YSIS) was initiated in 1982 and is delivered through the Department of Health and Social Services.
“This program is aimed specifically at seniors with very little income who have no control over the increase in the cost of living,” Hart said. “This added assistance will help seniors address these added costs.”
