Team Yukon Wins “Spirit of the Games Award” at the 2008 Canada 55+ Games

WHITEHORSE – Archie Lang, Minister responsible for Sport, Recreation & Physical Activity has congratulated the 82 members of Team Yukon who participated in the 2008 Canada 55+ Games in Dieppe, New Brunswick.

“On behalf of all Yukoners, I congratulate all of you for your outstanding achievements at the games and for once again bringing home the “Spirit of the Games Award,” Lang said while attending the recent meeting of the ElderActive Recreation Association. “Winning this award for the third time in five years is positive proof that Yukoners set the bar high when it comes to sportsmanship, camaraderie and enthusiasm.”

The “Spirit of the Games Award” is presented by the Host Society at the final banquet of the Games to the team that most exemplifies team spirit at the Games.

Minister Lang also took the opportunity to praise the ElderActive Recreation Association and Team Yukon Organizing Committee for their hard work and effort in providing a quality experience for Yukon participants.

“We support this group not only for participation in the national 55+ Games, but for the two years between games when Yukoners are encouraged to continue being active in body and mind with their sights set on the next time they represent Yukon at this national competition,” Lang added. “It’s about promoting and providing Yukoners 55 years and older with opportunities to live an active, healthy lifestyle.”

Yukoners 55 years or older who would like more information about the Yukon and Canada 55+ Games, are encouraged to contact the ElderActive Recreation Association at 867-633-5010.
