WHITEHORSE – The Yukon government Corporate Shredding and Recycling Program is on track to divert 45 tons of material from area landfills this year.
The Public Service Commission operates the shredding and recycling program through its Workplace Diversity Employment Office (WDEO) in partnership with Raven Recycling.
“We are really impressed with how this program is working,” Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission Patrick Rouble said. “This is a great example of what can be accomplished when government works with non-government organizations for the betterment of our community.”
Raven Recycling picks up discarded paper from government offices and delivers it for processing to five Yukon government employees hired through the Training and Work Experience Program for People with Disabilities. A full-time program manager oversees operations.
“Since Raven Recycling aims to make Yukon a zero-waste society, we see this project as a way to divert waste and reduce our environmental impact. Our partnership with the Yukon government’s WDEO has been beneficial to both organizations in reaching our goals,” Operations Manager of Raven Recycling Ralph Charlton added.
“We promote our program as a confidential and secure service to government offices in the Whitehorse area,” WDEO Disability Services Manager Jon Breen said. “We have 79 bins in various locations. That’s double what we had last year so we take that as a vote of confidence in the shredding and recycling initiative.”
