Northerners Gather to Share Knowledge on Health and Learning
WHITEHORSE - Close to 100 delegates and speakers from across the North are meeting in Whitehorse this week at the Northern Health and Learning Symposium to discuss health and learning in Canada's northern territories announced Glenn Hart, Minister of Health and Social Services and Patrick Rouble, Minister of Education.
"The symposium is a great venue to share and discuss successful programs that address health and learning in the three territories,' Hart said. "There is a direct relationship between education and health. Health and social factors have a profound effect on learning. Likewise, education factors such as literacy can greatly influence someone's ability to make healthy lifestyle choices. This symposium provides a great opportunity to examine what works in the North for northern residents."
The symposium will enable northerners to share information on programs and initiatives that link health and learning. Session topics include Learning on the Land, Promoting Healthier Eating, Using Technology to Promote Health and Engaging Youth through the Arts. The aim is that delegates will learn about successful programs in other communities and take the ideas home with them to implement in their own community or organization.
"Learning is a lifelong process," Rouble added. "Creating environments - whether it's homes, workplaces or schools - that support healthy choices and continuous learning helps to build a stronger Yukon today and for future generations."
The Northern Health and Learning Symposium was organized by the local Yukon School Health Advisory Committee on behalf of the Canadian Council on Learning's Health and Learning Knowledge Centre. The symposium runs September 24–25.
