Culture Quest Brings Out Yukon Talent

WHITEHORSE - What began as a fund to develop and showcase Yukon talent and heritage for the Canada Winter Games (CWG) and beyond has evolved to an established program that continues to develop and highlight Yukon talent, Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor announced.

"The Canada Winter Games allowed us the opportunity to really showcase our excellence and uniqueness on the national stage," Taylor said. "Since then, Culture Quest has shifted its focus towards supporting the creation of new work and enabling it to reach an audience outside of Yukon, while continuing to support community celebration and arts development projects."

Brothers Galen and Daniel Ashley, who performed at the CWG Opening and Closing Ceremonies, also traveled to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics to perform at Canada House. Culture Quest provided support for the brothers to create their "Dig the Planet" music and multimedia project, elements of which were performed in China.

In March 2008, Yukon dancers Jude Wong and Charlie Wilson danced on the walls of the Vancouver Public Library as part of Vancouver's Cultural Olympiad, celebrating Vancouver arts and culture, leading up to the 2010 Olympics of which Yukon is a contributing partner.

"With Yukon's status as a contributing partner in the upcoming 2010 Olympics, this fund is well positioned to ensure that Yukon talent is showcased at such an important event," Taylor said.

Other projects, such as the North Klondyke Highway music program, which is based in Carmacks and develops young musicians in fiddling, songwriting, touring and sound recording, are also identifying and developing young Yukon talent.

"This investment has had enormous impacts on the growth and creative development of Yukon community and professional arts," said Michele Emslie, Culture Quest coordinator. "The arts flourish when there is targeted funding for skill development, original productions and showcasing opportunities. Culture Quest has provided funds to achieve this."

Culture Quest was initiated in celebration of Yukon's Decade of Sport and Culture, with the Yukon Arts Centre managing the program for the Department of Tourism and Culture.

Since its inception in 2003, the Yukon government has provided annual funding of $157,000 for Culture Quest.
