Interim Space Plan Improves Conditions at Whitehorse Correctional Centre

WHITEHORSE - Renovations at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre are now complete. Changes will improve the environment for inmate supervision and provide additional program space by reconfiguring existing facilities.

"These changes will assist in the transition to a new facility and modern correction practices," Justice Minister Marian C. Horne said. "It is important that we provide inmates with an environment that is conducive to healing."

The renovations, which began in April, include the conversion of a program room into a multi-use First Nations-focused space with a spirituality centre and an office.

Improvements to the women's dorm include increased living area, the addition of a second bathroom and laundry facilities.

An additional secure fenced yard off the women's dorm will be complete by late fall. This is a significant improvement allowing female inmates regular and more frequent access to outdoors and was added to the overall list of renovations after construction was complete.

The dorms had unnecessary walls removed to improve sight lines and to open the living space, providing more space for meals in the dorms. All dorms had an improved style of bed frame installed providing inmate privacy.

The kitchen mess area has been redeveloped into a multi-use program space with three additional offices.

"These improvements to the WCC are helping to provide staff with appropriate resources to aid them in carrying out their duties," Horne added.
