Six Artists to Tour Their Works Outside Yukon

WHITEHORSE - Six recipients of the recently initiated Touring Artist Fund will share $38,610 in funding to assist promoting themselves outside Yukon and furthering their professional development, announced Minister of Tourism and Culture Elaine Taylor.

"Exposure of Yukon's thriving, diverse artistic talents to outside audiences is an important step in supporting, encouraging and promoting the creation of art," Taylor said. "Yukon government is pleased to provide assistance to our visual, performing and literary artists through the Touring Artist Fund."

The $100,000 Touring Artist Fund established earlier this year assists artists and ensembles who create and produce original work with the intention of expanding their scope to reach new audiences. This funding allows them to amplify their exposure to national and international levels. It is an applicant-driven funding program that is adjudicated four times a year by the Yukon Arts Advisory Council in an arms-length process. Six projects were adjudicated for the June 2008 intake, with requests totalling more than $41,700 in funding.

Musician Gordie Tentrees is excited to be a recipient of this funding.

"The support from the Touring Artist Fund is going to help introduce my music to a new market in Europe," Gordie Tentrees said, speaking on behalf of his band. "It will help put me in front of a larger audience base by opening for international artist Fred Eaglesmith. This experience will help push my live performances to a new level."

The next deadline for the Touring Artist Fund is September 15, 2008.

Applicants are encouraged to consult the Fund Administrator before applying. Telephone: 867-667-3535, toll free at 1-800-661-0408 ext. 3535. Email: artsfund@gov.yk.ca.
