Elders, Youth, First Nations and Municipalities Benefit from CDF

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government is investing over $100,000 through the Community Development Fund (CDF) by investing in nine projects throughout the territory, Minister of Economic Development Jim Kenyon announced.

"Through the Community Development Fund, the Yukon government invests in projects that benefit all Yukoners," Kenyon said. "These programs and services provide social, cultural and economic benefits for Yukon residents and communities and deserve our support."

The Klondike Active Trails and Transport Society is receiving $12,800 to conduct a field study to evaluate the feasibility of developing the historic 12 Mile Ditch between Dawson City and Tombstone Territorial Park into a recreational trail.

"This funding will help Klondike residents develop a trail that will benefit residents and visitors alike," said Klondike MLA Steve Nordick. "A year-round recreational trail would allow users to remains physically active while enjoying some of the best scenery this region has to offer."

The Yukon Council on Aging is receiving $11,555 to continue workshops for seniors.

"This year, our seniors' workshops will address topics like pandemics, wills and estates, and the encouragement of hobbies such as recording life experiences and digital camera usage," Yukon Council on Aging Board Member Heather Thompson said. "This funding will help provide invaluable opportunities for seniors to continue learning."

The Yukon Quest International Association was also a successful applicant and will receive $12,000 to develop a promotional wall map and online interactive travel map detailing the route of the 1000-mile Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.

"The Yukon Quest deeply appreciates the funding from CDF for our Mapping Project, which will include both a printed map and online interactive features," Yukon Quest Executive Director Stephen Reynolds said. "The Mapping Project will illustrate the significance of our shared heritage of travel by dog team through documentation of these traditional trails, and will ensure that future generations of Yukoners have access to accurate geographical and historic information about this aspect of our territory's evolution."

The new projects are being funded under the CDF's Tier 1 funding intake, which supports projects requesting $20,000 or less.

Community Development Funding is available for large and small projects, with Tier 2 funding available for applications of $20,001 to $75,000 and Tier 3 awards for applications over $75,000. The next Tier 2 intake is September 15.
