Government to Hold Yukon Youth Engagement Forum on Climate Change

WHITEHORSE - A special engagement forum set for this weekend is one way the Yukon government is actively working with youth to explore how we can adapt to climate change in the years to come, Environment Minister Elaine Taylor announced today.

"Youth will continue to have an important role in addressing and responding to climate change," Taylor said. "This forum will provide a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from youth their concerns and priorities for change."

Environment Yukon's Yukon Youth Engagement Forum builds on the success of the Yukon Youth Outside (the box) experiential summit held in August 2007. The forum, which begins on Friday and runs until Sunday afternoon, will bring together 20 youth (ages 16 to 25) to generate further ideas for the Yukon Government Climate Change Action Plan and other climate change-related activities.

The forum will provide youth with an opportunity to speak directly with government policy makers about climate change and what can be done to respond effectively to the changes unfolding around us. Activities will include:

  • a series of team building and communication skill building activities;
  • presentations to demystify the issue of climate change; and
  • sessions to provide feedback on the draft Climate Change Action Plan.

Minister Taylor will speak with participants at the beginning of the forum at 3 p.m. on Friday, August 8 at Spruce Wind Lodge at Marsh Lake.

A copy of the final report about the summit is available on the Environment Yukon web site, under Publications | Plans & Reports.
