Government Launches Rebate Program to Help Yukoners Reduce Energy Costs

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon government is helping Yukoners reduce their energy costs by launching Good Energy, a comprehensive program which provides $100-$500 in cash rebates on a wide range of energy efficient products.

“Good Energy is part of the Yukon government’s effort to help Yukoners lower their energy costs,” Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Brad Cathers said. “This program supports Yukoners’ move to energy efficient products which can lower their energy costs.”

Good Energy rebates apply to a wide range of products, including high efficiency:
• kitchen and laundry appliances
• solar domestic hot water systems
• pellet and wood stoves
• oil and propane furnaces and boilers
• outboard boat motors

The products must meet specific energy efficiency requirements to be eligible for the rebate.  A number of industry standards regarding efficiency are used, including Energy Star®.

Good Energy is an expansion of the popular Appliance Rebate Program offered by the Energy Solutions Centre.  Last year, that program had 589 participants (approximately 5 per cent of Yukon households) who received rebates for 676 appliances and 83 furnaces/boilers.  It is expected the expanded program will encourage even more Yukoners to choose the most energy efficient products possible when purchasing.

“We all have options when it comes to reducing our energy bills,” Cathers said.  “I encourage Yukoners to choose Good Energy when they are buying products for their homes and businesses.”

Eligible Good Energy products are available at many Yukon retailers.  Rebate forms and program information is available at Yukon retailers or at the Energy Solutions Centre.  The Energy Solutions Centre can be contacted by calling 867-393-7063 or toll-free at 1-800-662-0408 ext. 7063, or by visiting www.esc.gov.yk.ca.

Good Energy runs until March 31, 2009.
