New Carcross/Tagish Renewable Resources Council to be Established

WHITEHORSE – Environment Minister Elaine Taylor today invited residents in the Traditional Territory of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation to participate in a newly formed renewable resources council that will help make management decisions in their area.

“I encourage people to share their knowledge of the land by becoming a member of the Carcross/Tagish Renewable Resources Council (RRC),” Taylor said. “The RRC strives to ensure local values and local concerns are taken into account when hunting rules, trapline use or other important decisions are being made.”

The Carcross/Tagish Renewable Resources Council is the 10th RRC to be formed in Yukon.

First Nation Final Agreements established RRCs as the “primary instrument” for local renewable resources management in Traditional Territories. These co-management groups consist of representatives nominated by the First Nation and by the Yukon government. RRCs may make recommendations about a wide range of activities, including:

- management plans for freshwater fish and wildlife, including Total Allowable Harvest;

- First Nation management of fish and wildlife on Settlement Lands; and

- allocating commercial and other uses for salmon.

Interested residents are encouraged to submit an application by September 2 to the Yukon Government Boards and Committees Secretariat. Carcross/Tagish First Nation has already received nominations and will announce them shortly. Current plans call for the RRC to be formally established this fall.

For more information, interested residents should call Environment Yukon at 667-5336 (1-800-661-0408, local 5336). Application forms are available on the Yukon government website (form #3538) or from the Territorial Representative in Carcross.
