Commissioner to Present Awards for Bravery at Canada Day Festivities
WHITEHORSE - Commissioner Geraldine Van Bibber invites all Yukoners and visitors to join in Canada Day activities on Tuesday, July 1.
"Celebrating Canada's birthday is an opportunity to relax with family and friends," Van Bibber said. "It's also a day to reflect on the many advantages of living in this country, and to thank those whose dedication and hard work result in successful Canada Day celebrations year after year."
At Shipyards Park in downtown Whitehorse, Commissioner Van Bibber will join community groups and individuals to celebrate Canada and to honour outstanding Yukoners. She will also welcome 28 new Canadians, following their swearing-in at the Canadian citizenship ceremony.
Commissioner's Awards for bravery will be presented to two citizens who demonstrated courage and determination at great personal risk, in an attempt to save the life of another.
One of these awards will be presented posthumously to Benjamin Correos, and accepted by his widow Josephine Correos. Benjamin Correos' bravery and selflessness in saving his young son Myles from drowning in the Yukon River in Whitehorse last August resulted in his own life being sacrificed.
A second award for bravery related to the same incident will be presented to Brendan Preston, for his valiant attempts to rescue Benjamin Correos from drowning.
"In addition to events around Canada's birthday, this is an opportunity to welcome new citizens to Yukon and recognize and honour Yukoners who strengthen the fabric of our territory," Van Bibber said. "I extend my heartfelt congratulations to those receiving awards."
Canada Day events in Whitehorse begin with a parade at 11 a.m. at the Elks' Club parking lot, arriving at Shipyards Park at approximately 11:45 a.m.
