Northern Premiers Discuss Stronger North and Better Canada
WHITEHORSE – Territorial premiers will be meeting in Yellowknife June 27–28 to discuss common issues affecting their jurisdictions under the theme “A Stronger North and a Better Canada.”
Yukon Premier Dennis Fentie, Northwest Territories Premier Floyd Roland and Nunavut Premier Paul Okalik will take the opportunity to discuss and work collectively on pan-northern issues.
“My colleagues and I continue to implement the Northern Cooperation Accord as signed in 2006,” Fentie said. “It is this united approach that has resulted in increased funding for health and economic development which allows us to continue to move forward on issues of joint importance.”
Other items on the agenda include fiscal arrangements with Canada, adaptation to climate change, the high cost of living associated with the North, the labour market and the 2010 Olympic Games.
