Mount Lorne Firefighters Receive State of the Art Fire Pumper
WHITEHORSE – A new $311,000 fire pumper has been delivered to the Mount Lorne Fire Department by Community Services Minister Glenn Hart.
“A water supply necessary for fire suppression is a major challenge for our firefighters, especially in the winter months,” Hart said. “The addition of this new fire pumper with an onboard compressed air foam system to the Mount Lorne Fire Hall is a welcomed asset for our firefighters in their efforts to deliver effective firefighting services to Mount Lorne and the surrounding area.”
Hart delivered the new fire pumper on behalf of the Department of Community Services’ Protective Services branch.
The truck’s compressed air foam system injects air into the hose with a water and foam solution to produce a foam blanket. The advantage of this system is that the amount of water required to extinguish a fire is reduced to as little as one third of applying water alone, which also decreases possible water damage.
“This new foam system is especially valuable in areas where water supplies are scarce as more water remains available for offensive fire attack,” Hart said.
Mount Lorne, Golden Horn, Ibex Valley, Hootalinqua and the Marsh Lake Volunteer Fire Departments have all signed a Mutual Aid Agreement with the City of Whitehorse which confirms that when any one fire station requires help, other fire departments can be called upon.
