$77,500 in Yukon High Performance Grants Awarded
WHITEHORSE – High performance athletes and officials are being awarded $77,500 under the Yukon High Performance Assistance Program, Minister responsible for Sport and Recreation Glenn Hart announced today.
“This funding provides support to Yukon’s developing high performance athletes and officials,” Hart said. “We are very pleased to increase the funds available for distribution under the High Performance Assistance Program for 2008/09 by an additional $34,000 from our Yukon Sport for Life funding initiative.”
The Yukon High Performance Athlete Assistance Program provides grant assistance to selected Yukon athletes who have demonstrated skills and achievements beyond the territorial level at provincial, national and international events.
Of the 25 athlete applications, 12 applied for gold level funding. A number of high level officials who are striving to upgrade their skills and certifications also submitted applications for funding.
The gold, silver and bronze funding relates to an athlete’s performance at a national or international level, a western Canadian level or a provincial level respectively. Performance and demonstrated potential determines funding amounts.
The Yukon High Performance Official Assistance Program provides support for officials to upgrade themselves with training beyond what is available in the Yukon. High level coaches are able to apply for funding through their sport under the Yukon Sport for Life – Coaching Enhancement initiative.
Grants are determined by a jury of members from the sport community and the Yukon government. Funding is supported by the Yukon Lottery Commission.
