New Yukon Bear Safety Booklet for Outdoor Enthusiasts
WHITEHORSE – A new booklet to help outdoor enthusiasts and casual hikers stay safe in bear country is now available, Environment Minister Dennis Fentie announced today.
The new booklet is the result of a cooperative effort between Environment Yukon, the Safety in Bear Country Society and Whitehorse wildlife videographer Phil Timpany.
“This is a tool for everyone who is -- or is thinking of -- enjoying Yukon’s wilderness,” Fentie said. “It’s important that both Yukon residents and visitors have the information they need to stay safe.”
The booklet is designed to provide practical and possibly life saving advice on how individuals can stay safe in bear country.
It is being distributed to Environment Yukon offices in the communities, Visitor Information Centres, sporting goods stores, and RV rental companies. You can also download it from Environment Yukon’s website at www.environmentyukon.gov.yk.ca
“We were pleased to be asked to help out with this booklet,” Safety in Bear Country Society Chair Andy McMullen of Yellowknife said. “This is a natural extension to the work of the society to show people how individuals can take steps to reduce or prevent encounters with bears.”
