Government Releases Violence Prevention Videos

WHITEHORSE – In recognition of Sexual Assault Prevention Month, Minister responsible for the Women’s Directorate Elaine Taylor and Justice Minister Marian Horne today released two Yukon relevant videos and an accompanying training manual in support of violence prevention work and persons looking to help those affected by violence.

“This initiative is the culmination of a three-year public awareness and education campaign focusing on violence against women and children,” Taylor said. “These new resources will help further educate and raise awareness of the resources available to assist those leaving abusive partners and other violent situations.”

The violence prevention videos are unique tools based on actual Yukon stories. They were created using talent from Yukon’s film and sound industry.

“One of the gaps identified prior to this project was the lack of violence prevention tools relevant to the social and cultural context of the North,” Horne said. “These videos will help inform front line workers about northern realities.”

The campaign and project, which is co-chaired by the Women’s Directorate and the Department of Justice, is sponsored and advised by Circles of Equality and Respect (CORE), an interagency group of 17 Yukon government departments and non-government organizations focused on violence prevention.

“As an organization that would use this resource, it’s definitely helpful and appropriate that the videos are northern focused and talk about our experiences,” Renée-Claude Carriere, Kaushee’s Place assistant director and CORE member, said.  “Developing the campaign with CORE’s input has ensured the frontline experience is reflected in the end product of the videos and the manual.”

Over the last three years, the campaign has produced a series of brochures, posters, culturally responsive training workshops for front line workers and a resource webpage, www.stopviolenceinyukon.ca, dedicated to prevention of violence against women and children.
