Celebrate Yukon Mining & Geology Week, May 26-30

WHITEHORSE – Yukon is celebrating Mining and Geology Week from May 26-30, Energy Mines and Resources Minister Archie Lang announced today.

“Mining and geology have had a tremendous influence on Yukon’s history, culture and economy,” he said. “I encourage Yukoners to participate in this week’s events and activities as we consider the importance of mining in our everyday lives.”

The Government of Yukon and the Yukon Chamber of Mines are organizing contests, displays and activities in Whitehorse, Destruction Bay and Haines Junction.  This year’s events include:

• Posters and displays at the Destruction Bay Community Hall, the St. Elias Convention Center in Haines Junction and the Elijah Smith Building in Whitehorse.
• Public talks in Whitehorse and Haines Junction by staff from the Yukon Geological Survey.
• Fun for school aged children in Destruction Bay (May 27) and Haines Junction (May 28-29); activities include: gold panning, making gold flake business cards, soapstone carving and trivia.

“The Yukon Chamber of Mines is pleased to work with the Yukon government on Mining and Geology Week,” Yukon Chamber of Mines President Carl Schulze said. “It is a wonderful opportunity for Yukoners of all ages to learn about the benefits of responsible and sustainable development of Yukon’s mineral resources.”

Yukon children are also encouraged to submit their entry to the “Your Computer Was Mined” poster contest and the “Mining Today” colouring contest.  Prizes include laptop computers, GPS units, Nintendo DS handheld console, memory sticks, gold panning kits, digital cameras and more.
