Yukon Museums Receive Capital Assistance Funding

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Historical and Museums Association (YHMA) and eight Yukon museums will share $300,000 in Special Projects Capital Assistance Program funding, announced Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor.

“Museums play an important role in preserving and protecting Yukon’s natural and cultural heritage,” Taylor said. The Yukon government is proud to support these important institutions and is pleased to provide funding in support of their continued work to safeguard Yukon’s history. “

“MacBride Museum is very pleased to receive this funding for our Collections Work Project,” Hank Moorlag, chair of the MacBride Museum’s board of directors, said. “As people may know, the MacBride Museum has been expanding its facilities and its broad range of collections.  We will now be able to continue our program of improving the collection records, cataloguing, and providing better access for researchers.”

“The Yukon Historical and Museums Association is very pleased to receive funding for continued joint marketing projects for Yukon heritage attractions as well as an innovative podcast development project YHMA will be undertaking in partnership with the Whitehorse Boys and Girls Club,” YHMA President Brent Slobodin said. “Together the projects will help increase visitation to our local museums and provide visitors and residents with fun opportunities to take part in and learn about our local history.”

The Special Projects Capital Assistance Program, established in 2006, supports specialized and small capital projects that include assistance toward joint marketing initiatives, artefact inventory and cataloguing, exhibit planning and development and collections management.

The Museum Funding Review Panel, consisting of museum professionals from around Yukon, adjudicated the proposals.

In total, approximately $1.3 million in direct government funding will be provided to Yukon’s museums, interpretive centres and First Nation cultural and heritage centres in fiscal year 2008/09.
