Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Languages Act on Yukon Francophone Day
WHITEHORSE – The Government of Yukon and l’Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY) will be hosting a ceremony to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Languages Act.
“French-speaking people have been contributing to Yukon’s economic, social and cultural growth since the 1800s,” Glenn Hart, the minister responsible for the French Language Services Directorate said. “The Government of Yukon is proud to have been providing French language services to French speaking Yukoners since the Languages Act came into force May 18, 1988.”
The ceremony will start at 12 p.m., May 15 in the foyer of the Government of Yukon Administration Building on Second Avenue, and will include a flag-raising, musical performances and refreshments to which everyone is welcome.
The two organizations will also be celebrating the launch of l’AFY’s new website and French tourism guide.
“The proclamation of the Journée de la francophonie yukonnaise is an important recognition from the Yukon government of the Francophones’ contribution to the territory’s development,” Jean-Marc Perreault, president of l’Association franco-yukonnaise said. “For a second year, Yukon residents will have the opportunity, through these celebrations, to better understand and appreciate the French language and Francophone culture. Furthermore, this day reminds people that the Francophone community is an integral part of the cultural, historical, economic and linguistic fabric of the country.”
There will be a display in the foyer of the Government of Yukon Administration Building of historical information marking the evolution of French language services in the Government of Yukon.
