Yukon Government Invests in Whitehorse Public Transit

WHITEHORSE – Government of Yukon is allocating over $466,000 toward the purchase of a new low emission technology transit bus for Whitehorse.

“The low emission bus will provide better access for disabled and elderly citizens,” Community Services Minister Glenn Hart said. “The new unit will replace an older bus at the end of its life cycle and enhance the reliability of the City of Whitehorse transit service.”

Funding for the new bus comes from the Public Transit Capital Trust, which was announced in the 2008 federal budget for projects such as rapid transit, rail, transit buses, and high-occupancy vehicle and bicycle lanes.

“The Yukon government recognizes public transit is a vital service and we support environmentally-friendly transportation,” Hart said. “In the past, we have supported Whitehorse transit projects including three new buses purchased prior to the Canada Winter Games.”

Federal funding from the transit trust complements long-term funding available for public transit projects under the $33-billion Building Canada Infrastructure Plan, including the Gas Tax Fund, which was made permanent in the Government of Canada’s 2008 Budget.
