Yukon 511, Road and Weather Reporting System, Has Gone Live
WHITEHORSE – Highways and Public Works Minister Archie Lang announced today the implementation of Yukon 511, a traveller information telephone and internet service that will provide live, accurate and up-to-the-minute information regarding Yukon’s road and weather conditions in both English and French.
“This is an exciting technological advancement for Yukon which will not only provide quick and convenient access to current road conditions and weather information but will effectively improve the driving safety for us all,” Lang said, adding “By making this free phone call, or checking out the 511 website, travellers will receive important information which is critical for safe driving, given our extreme weather conditions and long distances between communities.”
Yukon joins Nova Scotia as one of the first jurisdictions in Canada to use the system that has been successfully implemented across the United States, including our neighbours in Alaska. This implementation is a much needed upgrade to a previously outdated system and was made possible through Transport Canada’s Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program funding.
“I congratulate the Government of Yukon on the implementation of the 511 information service,” said the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “This is an important addition to our nation’s transportation system and will enhance the safety of Canadian travellers. Our government supports the future implementation of the service in all provinces and territories.”
The strategic investment in this monitoring system is critical to Yukon’s infrastructure and will be beneficial in improving the safety of our local communities as well as providing our visiting road travellers with a practical information tool for their northern adventure.
