WHITEHORSE – The Department of Community Services will be inviting public comment on proposed amendments to the Medical Profession Act and regulations to update and improve the legislation.
The Medical Profession Act governs the registration and licensing of physicians respecting their education and qualifications, professional conduct; discipline and offences, and professional corporations.
“The proposed amendments will assist in the enhancement of public safety, quality medical care and the recruitment and retention of physicians in Yukon,” Community Services Minister Glenn Hart said. “We want to hear Yukoners’ views as well as those of professionals from within the health system.”
The Yukon Medical Council, comprised of physicians and lay persons, is governed by and utilizes the Medical Profession Act with respect to regulating the practice of medicine and medical care provided by physicians in Yukon.
“I am pleased that we are moving ahead with this review of the Medical Profession Act,” Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers said. “We have excellent physicians in Yukon, and updating our legislation helps keep us in step with their needs and those of the public.”
The practice of medicine evolves with advancements in clinical knowledge and professional standards. Legislation must reflect these advancements to assist in ensuring quality health care and continued public safety.
Yukon Government has committed to and implemented several initiatives to assist with the retention and recruitment of health care providers. Ensuring improved and updated legislation that governs medical professions is a vital part of this commitment.
