Continued Funding Announced for Skills Canada Yukon

WHITEHORSE – Education Minister Patrick Rouble announced today $40,000 in funding to support the tenth annual Territorial Skills Competition to be hosted by Skills Canada-Yukon at Yukon College in April.

“The Government of Yukon is committed to supporting Skills Canada-Yukon in presenting this competition, which creates education opportunities and awareness about skilled trades in Yukon,” Rouble said. “Skills Canada-Yukon is an important partner in delivering skilled trades education to Yukon youth.”

The Territorial Skills Competition consists of a series of individual competitions in various trade and technology areas. Secondary students and apprentices from across Yukon will gather on April 4. Winners from the various competitions will be invited to show off their skills at the Canadian Skills Competition May 24 in Calgary.

“The Territorial Skills Competition is a great way for Yukon youth and apprentices to gain experience and confidence in the trades,” Executive Director of Skills Canada-Yukon, Dan Curtis, said. “We are grateful for the Yukon government support that has made this event possible.”

“Skills Canada-Yukon provides a quality, hands-on experience that truly engages young people and allows them to fully consider skilled trades as a potential career,” Rouble added. “The competition gives Yukon youth and apprentices an opportunity to shine and ultimately compete against their peers across Canada.”

Skills Canada-Yukon funding is available through the Yukon government’s Community Training Funds. Last July, an additional $75,000 was provided to Skills Canada-Yukon to support the operation of the skills centre on Platinum Road, 72 skills clubs throughout Yukon, and other trades related programming for youth.
