New Funding Supports Yukon Arts and Cultural Projects
WHITEHORSE – The Arts Fund is providing $188,000 in funding to 17 projects designed to promote the arts and enhance the well-being of Yukoners throughout our communities, announced Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor.
The preservation and promotion of arts and culture contributes to both the social and economic well being of Yukon,” Taylor said. “I am pleased that this final intake for 2007 was able to accommodate a larger number of eligible requests due to the increase for arts funding announced last fall. The Yukon government recognizes that artistic excellence requires innovative thinking, experimentation and community participation, all of which are supported by the Arts Fund.”
Les Essentielles received $1,000 for their project “International Women's Day Artistic Celebration.” President Louise-Hélène Villeneuve stated: “We are pleased that our project Reconnaissance des femmes du monde à Whitehorse was chosen. This project, celebrating International Women's Day 2008, provided an opportunity to four women of different cultures to perform on stage recently, celebrating the talent and strength of women in our society.”
The Arts Fund is an applicant-driven funding program that supports artists and communities in creative endeavours such as festivals, events, training, and art creation in all forms. The fund is adjudicated four times a year by the Yukon Arts Advisory Council in an arms-length process.
