Premier Promotes Yukon Oil and Gas at Arctic Gas Symposium
WHITEHORSE – Premier Dennis Fentie will continue to promote Yukon’s oil and gas sector at the Arctic Gas Symposium in Calgary today.
Fentie is speaking at the symposium along with other keynote speakers North West Territories Premier Floyd Roland and Deputy Minister, Economic Development for Nunavut Rosemarie Keenainak,
The theme of the symposium is The Role of Government and Industry in Ensuring Appropriate Development of Arctic Resources.
“As a government, it is our role and responsibility to ensure oil and gas resources are developed in a manner that will provide the most benefit to our citizens,” Fentie said. “This means forming partnerships and working cooperatively with industry and other jurisdictions, including First Nations.
“The partnerships we have formed, coupled with the cooperative efforts we share, are bearing fruit,” Fentie continued. “Our revised oil and gas rights disposition process is a success; we negotiated significant socio-economic opportunities for Yukon from the proponent of the Mackenzie Gas Project; and we recently passed competitive royalty regulations under our Yukon Oil and Gas Act.”
The Alaska Highway gas pipeline also remains a high priority for the Government of Yukon. Premier Fentie recently returned from a meeting in Anchorage with Alaska Governor Palin, where he signed an Intergovernmental Relations Accord with the Alaska state government. The agreement includes a commitment to cooperate on transportation links and the proposed Alaska Highway gas pipeline.
Yukon continues to promote its interests in both pipeline projects – providing Yukoners with maximum benefits while minimizing social and environmental impacts.
