Yukon Invests in Capacity Development

WHITEHORSE – Minister of Education Patrick Rouble today announced $700,000 in new funding to 2010/11 through the Northern Strategy for the Association of Yukon Communities’ Community Training Trust Society (CTTS) for municipal and First Nation government capacity development.

"We are investing in the Association of Yukon Communities (AYC) because it provides valuable training opportunities for representatives of municipal and First Nation governments," Rouble said. "These training opportunities help develop capacity in local governments, thereby improving quality of life for all Yukoners."

The AYC will use these funds to hire a training coordinator, survey current training needs, identify existing training opportunities, and provide subsidized training opportunities for members of First Nation and municipal governments.

"The AYC is grateful for these Northern Strategy funds as they will provide for the delivery of training in a variety of areas including governance, economic development, sustainability, human resource management, and information technology," AYC President Doug Graham said. "Training will take place in the classroom, on-the-job and through mentorship arrangements."

Under the Northern Strategy framework, approved by the Yukon Forum, First Nation governments and Yukon government departments are eligible to submit project proposals for funding. Third parties, such as non-government organizations, are able to bring project proposals forward to Yukon and First Nation governments with a request to champion their proposals.

Government of Yukon and First Nation leaders are committed to supporting projects that will benefit all Yukoners in the spirit of the priorities set out in the Yukon Chapter of the Northern Strategy, which was developed in consultation with all Yukoners.
