Yukon Invests in the Whitehorse Waterfront
WHITEHORSE – Community Services Minister Glenn Hart is pleased to announce that the Yukon government is moving forward with a public consultation on the Whitehorse waterfront.
"The Yukon government fully supports the consultations and community involvement planned for the development of the Whitehorse waterfront," Hart said. "This approach proved to be very effective for the planning of the Carcross waterfront development and added value to its final design."
The Whitehorse Waterfront Development project is funded through a combined $22 million-contribution agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon under Canadian Strategic Investment Fund (CSIF).
The riverfront wharf, lighting, parking, and trails are identified in CSIF in the amount of $1.9 million. The Yukon government will finalize design for the wharf in 2008.
CSIF supports large-scale infrastructure projects that strengthen areas vital to sustaining economic growth and enhancing quality of life for Canadians.
"I’m pleased that this important phase in the waterfront development has been reached. This is an opportunity for Yukoners to help shape the future of downtown Whitehorse," Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor said. "As this project proceeds, it will complement a number of other initiatives already underway such as the MacBride Museum and trolley expansions."
The public consultation on the wharf concept will be held at the Whitehorse Visitor Information Centre Jan. 15 and 17 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend these information sessions or visit www.community.gov.yk.ca where people can view wharf concept sketches and fill-out a questionnaire.
