CDF Contributes $599,572 to Help Strengthen Communities
WHITEHORSE – Minister of Economic Development Jim Kenyon has announced that the Community Development Fund (CDF) has awarded $599,572 of Tier 2 funding. The work of the 12 recipient organizations will continue to help make Yukon communities healthy and safe places to live.
"This government values the ongoing work by community-based groups to improve the quality of life for all Yukoners," Kenyon said. "We are committed to working with Yukon communities and non-government organizations on such worthwhile initiatives as youth programming, recreation and community infrastructure."
The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation received $71,390 to support a variety of special events celebrating and promoting fitness. This fitness/wellness program is designed for youth and adults and offers a variety of programs including bow-building, Tae Kwan Do and winter camping.
"Without the assistance of CDF these activities would not be available at the high level we hope to deliver them," Fitness/Wellness Program Administrator Dustin Davis explains. "The project will increase the number of meaningful and engaging experiences open to citizens of Old Crow this year and enhance programs for future years as well."
Also working to promote wellness within its community, the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation will use $25,959 to support a wellness retreat designed especially for women. This three day retreat will help women gain a greater sense of self esteem and empowerment, which will help lessen their social isolation.
"This CDF grant will enable us to host the first of a series of women’s wellness retreats,” Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation Pre-Treatment and Aftercare Worker Jennifer Nunan said. “It’s always about prevention, promotion and awareness. This retreat will serve to lessen the social isolation women feel by connecting with other women who share common experiences, while at the same time giving them information on issues that impact their lives."
Tier 2 level funding is available for applications of $20,001 to $75,000. CDF is available for large and small projects, with Tier 1 awards for applications of $20,000 or less and Tier 3 awards for applications over $75,000.
