Government Launches Groundbreaking Pilot Project
WHITEHORSE – Education Minister Patrick Rouble is pleased to announce the launch of the first training session for teachers piloting the new Yukon First Nations-focused study modules for Grade 5.
"Developing curriculum materials and resources has been a very important element of our work at the Department of Education over the last few years," Education Minister Patrick Rouble said. "Through working cooperatively with the Yukon First Nation Education Advisory Committee and the Yukon First Nation Curriculum Working Group, I believe we’ve developed a resource for the classroom that will create a more responsive education system that allows learners to succeed."
The Department of Education will be delivering four new modules in Grade 5 classrooms this school year. The modules focus on Yukon First Nations languages, clans, citizenship and governance."This teacher training is a big step forward in creating the kind of education system in which Yukon First Nation cultures, histories and language are better reflected," the director of First Nations Partnerships and Programs Unit, Tina Jules said. "Much like the development and implementation of the Yukon First Nation-focused early reader series, these social studies modules focused on traditional knowledge were made possible by the dedication and cooperation of the Yukon First Nations Education Advisory Committee and the Yukon First Nations Curriculum Working Group."
The Department of Education plans to develop more Yukon First Nation-focused resources in the upcoming year including more modules for elementary and intermediate grades.
This is just the beginning of our work in this area," Rouble added. "With the help of the Yukon First Nations Education Advisory Committee and its working groups, we plan to continue developing the kinds of materials and resources that will make the Yukon classroom a relevant and engaging place for everyone to learn."
