CDF Gives MADD Props
WHITEHORSE – The Yukon government's Community Development Fund (CDF) is supporting Mothers Against Drinking and Driving (MADD) in their efforts to make Yukon communities safer. CDF has contributed $20,000 toward the purchase of a Simulated Impaired DriviNg Experience (SIDNE), an interactive tool used to demonstrate the effects of impaired driving.
"MADD is an excellent example of the sort of community organization that CDF is available to support," Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. "By continuing to educate Yukoners on the effects of impaired driving, MADD is helping to make Yukon a safer place to live."
MADD Whitehorse received a $20,000 CDF grant which they plan to put towards the purchase of a SIDNE vehicle and Intoxiclock & Fatal Reflections hardware/software, the first of its kind in Canada.
"We are pleased to be able to get this program in Yukon," MADD Whitehorse Chapter President, Jan Trim, said. "This is for the whole Yukon and should help to get the message out that driving impaired is not the way to go. This machine will benefit many Yukoners throughout the coming years."
This CDF contribution is part of a larger fundraising effort by MADD Whitehorse. Once the SIDNE and related hardware/software have been purchased, the program will be available to all Yukon communities. MADD Whitehorse will target youth from grades 9 - 12 and adults in driving programs. SIDNE is a hands-on tool that will allow participants to experience the effects of impaired driving. It is moveable and can be used on any clear, flat surface such as a gymnasium or a parking lot.
CDF staff are available to help organizations develop project ideas and guide applicants through the CDF application process. Organizations are encouraged to contact the CDF office with their project ideas. Staff travel to Yukon communities and are available to meet with organizations in their own community and answer questions about CDF.
Tier 1 funding was recently awarded to eight projects requesting funding under $20,000. CDF is available for large and small projects, with Tier 2 level of funding available for applications of $20,001 to $75,000 and Tier 3 awards for applications over $75,000.
