Government Continues Investment in Training Opportunities for Yukoners

WHITEHORSE – Education Minister Patrick Rouble has announced that the Department of Education will continue its investment in Community Training Funds (CTF). This is a targeted approach to training that helps Yukoners across the territory take advantage of local employment opportunities.

"Under the 07/08 budget, the Yukon government allocated nearly $1.5 million to Community Training Funds," Rouble said. "The government sees this kind of investment as integral to supporting our healthy, thriving community."

CTF continues to provide a variety of training opportunities for Yukoners by supporting various projects in trades and technology, literacy, basic employment skills development as well as heritage and cultural worker development.

"Thanks to the funds that Yukon Women in Trades and Technology (YWITT) have received, the level of programming we are able to offer to women interested in the trades is greatly enriched," YWITT Program Coordinator Betty Irwin, said. "Without money from CTF, we would not be able to offer programs and services such as the Young Women Exploring Trades Conference."

"As Yukoners continue to enhance their skills and training, they increase their employment options," Rouble said. "CTF plays an important role in developing these skills through targeted, specific training opportunities."

There are three main types of community training funds: industry or sector based, community based, and project specific. A number of literacy initiatives and programs at Yukon College are also supported through CTF. For more information call 667-5727.
