Historic Properties Assistance Program Awards Funding
WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government’s Historic Properties Assistance Program is providing more than $82,000 in funding for the restoration and preservation of privately-owned historic properties announced Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor.
"Historically significant sites and properties are treasured and highly valued aspects of Yukon’s character and history," Taylor said. "The Yukon government is proud to assist private owners in maintaining Yukon’s built heritage for future generations."
A total of 11 projects will share $82,410.72 in funding. These projects vary from developing management plans and exterior restoration to foundation stabilization and roof repairs for a number of properties throughout Yukon.
"Funding received through the Historic Properties Assistance Program has allowed Ta’an Kwäch’än Council to do substantial landscape management at key heritage sites," Ta'an Kwäch'än Council Heritage Manager Mark Nelson said. "These sites are still actively used today, so the work done through these projects helps contribute to the on-going practice of First Nations’ culture in Yukon."
The Historic Properties Assistance Program makes available contributions on a matching basis each year to applicants who own sites that are deemed historically significant, and whose plans for preservation of those sites are in accordance with specific guidelines.
The program was created in recognition of the need to preserve Yukon’s many privately-owned historic properties. The funding makes technical and financial assistance available to those who wish to undertake preservation, restoration, development and/or interpretation of their historic properties.
