Yukon Government Supports 16 community Projects This Summer

WHITEHORSE, YT – Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon has announced 16 Tier 1 Community Development Fund (CDF) grant recipients. These most recent CDF-supported projects are working to improve quality of life in Yukon by meeting the needs of Yukoners of all ages.

"The recipients of CDF grants are excellent examples of the hard working, community-based groups across Yukon that are working for the benefit of Yukoners," Kenyon said. "It is important that our government continue to support projects of this kind to ensure they can continue the work they do to improve the lives of all Yukoners."

The Town of Faro is receiving $12,850 to revitalize its skateboard park. The goal of the project is to engage youth in the development, planning and revitalization of the town's existing skateboard facility.

"The skateboard facility has been identified by the youth as something they want," Faro Chief Administrative Officer Hermann Minderlein said. "It will provide youth with exposure to training opportunities in the trades required for this project."

The Yukon Council on Aging is arranging a series of workshops on issues affecting Yukon seniors. Topics for the popular workshops include wills, the role of a care giver, preparing for a pandemic and living with Alzheimers disease. The CDF contributed $16,632 to this project as part of the Yukon government’s continued support for projects that provide services to elders and seniors.

"Seniors are an integral part of any community and it is important that seniors be educated, informed and continue the upgrading of knowledge on all matters affecting their health, welfare, safety and security," Yukon Council on Aging member, Dorothy Drummond said. "Seniors really appreciate that there is funding available to keep them up to date on issues that matter to them."

CDF grants are available to a wide variety of community organizations. Funding is divided into three tiers; Tier 1 is funds up to $20,000 per request, Tier 2 funding is for project requests between $20,001 and $75,000 and Tier 3 supports requests above $75,000.
