Four Additional Yukon Students Receive Medical Bursary in 2007/08
WHITEHORSE – Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers today announced the names of the latest four Yukon students to receive medical education bursaries this year to help off-set the costs of their post-secondary medical educations.
"I am very pleased to announce the names of these young Yukon adults who have chosen medicine as a career and we are very proud to be able to support them in reaching their goals," Cathers said. "The granting of these bursaries is one of the ways that the Yukon government is looking to increase the available pool of health care professionals in Yukon."
The four students to receive funding from the program are Alisa Kelly, Jodie Clark, Jennifer Horton and Keddy Adams.
Kelly is entering her second of three years at McMaster University; Clark is in the third of four years at the University of British Columbia; and Horton and Adams are both entering their first year of medical school at the University of Alberta.
With these awards, the government is now supporting a total of eight Yukon medical students at universities across the country. Seven bursary recipients in medical schools are receiving $10,000 per annum while the eighth, presently in his second year of Family Medicine residency, is receiving $15,000.
"It is encouraging to see so many Yukon students who want to be doctors," Cathers added. "The support we are providing them fits well with our health and human resources strategy and the fact that we need to support our own in pursuing their education. We will ultimately benefit when these young folks start coming home."
