Arts and Cultural Projects Receive Funding Support

WHITEHORSE – Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor announced today that funding in the amount of $112,500 is being made available through the Arts Fund and will be shared amongst 10 community groups and art collectives.

"The Yukon government is proud to support and assist community groups and collectives pursuing creative endeavours," Taylor said. "Artistic expression and presence is vitally important to a healthy, thriving community. Through projects such as these the community as a whole benefits greatly."

The Arts Fund is adjudicated four times a year by the Yukon Arts Advisory Council in an arms-length process. It is an applicant-driven funding program that supports artists and community groups in creative ventures such as festivals, events, training, and art creation in all forms.

"Extremely Moving Youth Society (EMYS) appreciates receiving Yukon Arts Fund support for the Repertory Development Project," the president of Extremely Moving Youth Society, Julie Thorpe said. "This initiative will help to bring nationally and internationally recognized choreographers and instructors to the Yukon to introduce new dance genres, choreographic techniques and add to the permanent repertoire of the EMYS dance company."

"Technical levels, performance qualities and confidence rise when young dancers have an opportunity to work with established, professional artists," Thorpe added. "Ongoing working relationships between local dancers and national artists will also be promoted through this project."

The next deadline for Arts Fund applications is Sept. 15. Applicants are encouraged to consult with the program officer before applying. Telephone 867-667-3535 or e-mail artsfund@gov.yk.ca.
