Funding Increases Awarded To Yukon Museums
WHITEHORSE - Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor is pleased to announce new funding for Yukon museums.
"Our government is proud to provide additional funding to the unique and diverse Yukon museums community," Taylor said. "Museums face specific challenges across Yukon. It is our hope to continue to work with our museums community to alleviate challenges and assist museums in their operations. This will allow for growth and improvements in programming and collections management."
$240,000 in additional funding will be disbursed among the 16 eligible Yukon museums, interpretive centres, and First Nation cultural/heritage centres throughout Yukon. Together with special initiative funding, direct government support to Yukon museums in 2006-07 is $1.28 million.
The Museums Advisory Committee met and endorsed the distribution of the new Museums Contribution Program funding. Yukon museums will benefit from increased funding to assist them in offsetting the expenditures associated with rising utility, insurance and staffing costs.
"This increase will permit the Town of Faro to address some deferred maintenance issues and update some of our displays in the Campbell Region Interpretive Centre," said Hermann Minderlein, Chief Administrative Officer for Town of Faro, which oversees the management and operations of the centre.
"The interpretive centre is the hub for our visitor traffic. The facility receives praise and accolades from all those returning, passing through or staying on to visit," Minderlein added.
The additional funding supports the objectives of the Yukon Museums Strategy, developed in 2005, and continues to support museums’ efforts towards sustainability.
The Museums Advisory Committee is made up of representatives from the Yukon museum community. The committee provides advice and recommendations to improve the sustainability of Yukon museums.
