Premier Fentie To Meet With Council Of Federation
WHITEHORSE - Premier Dennis Fentie is looking forward to discussions on common priorities when he meets with his provincial and territorial counterparts later this week.
Fentie will travel to Moncton, New Brunswick for a meeting with Canadian premiers and leaders of national Aboriginal organizations on August 8, and with Canadian premiers for a Council of the Federation (CoF) meeting August 9-10.
"I look forward to meeting with Canada's premiers and Aboriginal leaders to address a number of issues important to Yukon's future and anticipate practical and productive discussions," Fentie said.
The main themes of this year's conference are climate change and energy. Yukon will co-lead, with British Columbia, a discussion on climate change adaptation.
"Climate Change is an important issue for Yukon, the North and all of Canada," Fentie said. "The discussion at the upcoming meeting will allow Premiers to share our jurisdictions' experiences and talk about individual actions we are taking. We will also be looking for common issues and joint actions we can take as a federation."
Energy discussions will focus on efforts to create a sustainable energy future for Canada.
"Sustainable energy is a priority for all Canadian jurisdictions and we need to work together to maximize economic impacts of Canada's energy, while providing appropriate environmental stewardship," Fentie added.
The Council of the Federation was created in 2003 and is comprised of all 13 provincial and territorial premiers. It enables premiers to work collaboratively to strengthen the Canadian federation by enhancing relationships among the provinces and territories, and with the federal government.
