New Deputy Minister Of Health And Social Services Appointed

WHITEHORSE - Premier Dennis Fentie announced today that former Whitehorse resident Stuart Whitley, QC has been appointed to the position of Deputy Minister of the Department of Health and Social Services.

"Mr. Whitley's senior public service experience at the federal and provincial level, coupled with his previous experience here in Yukon, prepares him well for his new role in the Department of Health and Social Services," Fentie said. "He succeeds John Greschner who is resigning after three years as the deputy in this department. I thank Mr. Greschner for his leadership and wish him well as he moves on."

Currently the senior regional director of the Northern Canada Region with Justice Canada, Whitley received his law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1973 and graduated from Dalhousie University with a Master of Laws in 1983.

Whitley worked previously for the Yukon government as the Deputy Minister of Justice from 1995 to 2000 and was also an Assistant Deputy Minister Attorney General in Manitoba from 1989 to 1995.

Whitley was a Fellow of the Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Public Leadership in 2000. He has also written two textbooks and contributed many articles to professional journals. Whitley has taught at various institutions, including Yukon College.

Health and Social Services Assistant Deputy Minister Bonnie Clark will be Acting Deputy Minister until Whitley's appointment takes effect September 4.
